The Speech

On behalf of the great state of Illinois, crossroads of a nation, land of Lincoln, let me express my deep gratitude for the privilege of addressing this convention. Tonight is a particular honor for me because, let's face it, my presence on this stage is pretty unlikely. My father was a foreign student, born and raised in a small village in Kenya. He grew up herding goats, went to school in a tin-roof shack. His father, my grandfather, was a cook, a domestic servant to the British.


링컨의 땅이며, 미국의 교차로에 위치한 위대한 일리노이 주를 대표하여 이 민주당 전당대회에서 연설할 수 있는 특별한 기회를 주신 것에 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 오늘 밤은 저에게 매우 영광스러운 날입니다. 왜냐하면, 솔직히 말씀 드려서, 제가 이 자 리에 설 수 있다는 것 자체가 상당히 드문 일이기 때문입니다. 제 아버지는 케냐의 한 작은 마을에서 태어나 자란 외국인 유학생이었습니다. 그분은 염소를 키우며 자 라졌고, 양철 지붕 판잣집 학교에 다녔습니다. 아버지의 아버지, 즉, 저의 할아버지 는 요리사로서 영국인 가정에서 하인 노릇을 하셨습니다.
  

But my grandfather had larger dreams for his son. Through hard work and perseverance my father got a scholarship to study in a magical place: America, which stood as a beacon of freedom and opportunity to so many who had come before. While studying here, my father met my mother. She was born in a town on the other side of the world, in Kansas. Her father worked on oil rigs and farms through most of the Depression. The day after Pearl Harbor he signed up for duty, joined Patton’s army and marched across Europe. Back home, my grandmother raised their baby and went to work on a bomber assembly line. After the war, they studied on the GI Bill, bought a house through FHA, and moved west in search of opportunity.

하지만 할아버지는 자신의 아들에 대해 더 큰 꿈을 가졌습니다. 노력과 인내심을 통 해 제 아버지는 장학금을 받아 동화에나 나올 법한 곳에서 공부할 기회를 얻었습니 다. 그 동안 수없이 많은 이민자들에게 자유와 기회의 등대로 여겨졌던, 바로 미국이 었습니다. 이곳에서 공부하는 동안 아버지는 제 어머니를 만났습니다. 어머니는 지 구 반대편 캔자스 주의 한 마을에서 태어나셨습니다. 어머니의 아버지는 대공황 시 절의 대부분을 유전과 농장에서 일하셨습니다. 진주만 공격이 일어난 그 다음 날, 외 할아버지는 자원 입대하여 패톤 장군의 부대에 배치 받았고, 유럽 전역을 행군했습 니다. 고향에 남겨진 외할머니는 어머니를 키우면서 폭격기를 제조하는 공장에서 일 하셨습니다. 전쟁이 끝나고 외할아버지와 외할머니는 제대 군인 장학금 덕택에 대학 공부를 하고, 연방주택청 덕에 집을 산 후, 기회를 찾아서쪽으로 이동했습니다.
  

And they, too, had big dreams for their daughter, a common dream, born of two continents. My parents shared not only an improbable love; they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or 'blessed, believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. They imagined me going to the best schools in the land, even though they weren't rich, because in a generous America you don't have to be rich to achieve your potential. They are both passed away now. Yet, I know that, on this night, they look down on me with pride.

그분들 역시 자신들의 딸에 대하여 큰 꿈을 가졌고 이리하여 두 개의 다른 대륙에서 하나의 공통된 꿈이 피었습니다. 제 부모님은 그 당시 불가능해 보이는 사랑만 나눈 게 아니라 이 나라에선 모든 것이 이루어질 수 있다는 믿음도 나눴습니다. 미국 같이 편견이 없는 나라에선 어떤 계통의 이름을 가지고 있더라도 성공하는 데 지장이 없 을 거라고 믿었기에 제 부모님께서는 저에게 축복 받은 자'를 뜻하는 버락이라는 아 프리카 이름을 주셨습니다. 미국 같이 관대한 나라에선 부잣집 아들이 아니어도 자 신의 잠재력을 마음껏 발휘할 수 있다고 믿었기에 제 부모님께서는 제가 이 나라 최 고의 엘리트 교육을 받는 것을 상상하실 수 있었습니다. 두 분 모두 이제 더 이상 제 곁에 없습니다. 하지만 오늘 밤, 두 분 모두 자랑스럽게 저를 지켜보고 계시다는 걸 저는 압니다.
